Tainan Art Museum is the first art museum of Independent Administrative Institution in Taiwan. In the midst of a strong social climate where culture supersedes politics, the Museum is expected to excel professionally and present an epoch-making image of museum.
Tainan Art Museum is Taiwan's first art museum in the 21st century which carries Tainan citizens' 60 years of eager longing. Tainan is not just the earliest city in Taiwan, but also a culturally diverse metropolis with 400 years of history. Transcending all the shifts and changes over time, Tainan keeps its prestige and bountiful cultural deposits. Tainan is still the pride of its citizens.
This Opening Special is a detailed record of the whole preparatory and preliminary process for the opening of the Museum from 2010 to 2019. All the painstaking efforts and ardent anticipation of countless people are also included in this book.

How should a 21st century art museum look like? Tainan Art Museum is divided into Building 1 and Building 2. Building 1 is consisted of the former Tainan Police Department designed by Sutejiro Umezawa in 1931 and a new building constructed in 2018; Building 2 is designed by Shigeru Ban Architects and Joe Shih Architects, fusing traditions and innovations with a cozy and friendly ambience permeating the place. Shigeru Ban is famous Japanese architect who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2014.
Building 2 is a state-of-the-art museum that combines the art displaying areas with the concept of "park" tactically. Rooted in Tainan, this 21st century art museum aspires to be an art museum for all, where children, youngsters, and seniors are welcomed, and balanced development of modern and contemporary art is upheld. The Museum also expects to breathe and pulse with the city.
Tainan Art Museum is a window of aesthetics to Asia and the world, allowing reciprocal connection between Tainan and the world.
